WELCOME TO THE WESTMINSTER SCHOOL, DUBAI.
Vision of the Department
Our collective departmental vision for English at The Westminster School, Dubai is to impart a multicultural and multilingual dimension to the study of English Language and literature. This vision is focused by a shared desire to raise the achievement of all pupils, at each of the Key Stages, through a consistent, progressive yet reiterative curriculum that enables pupils to grow personally and academically, through an improved understanding of language and literature, shared culture and the wider world in which we live. We envision confident students who express their ideas clearly and boldly; who are tolerant of others and comfortable with contradictions and complexity; who are seekers and creators. Ultimately, we envision pupils who are empowered by their education to interact effectively and usefully in their society.
At the center of this philosophy is the pupil and to meet the demands of the time and age Teaching and Learning in English needs to be multi-faceted. We aspire to make every lesson, for every pupil, accessible, engaging and challenging thereby allowing each pupil to enjoy their own personal growth and development through stimulation, enhanced knowledge and awareness and, ultimately, increased self-esteem.
With our shared vision in mind, we, as a department, are constantly striving to improve all aspects of English teaching. We are in the process of a complete overhaul of all of our schemes of work. The purpose is to ensure that lessons in all of the Key Stages are up-to-date, thematic, skills-based, consistent, differentiated (by ability and learning style) and that Assessment for Learning, through formative, diagnostic teacher assessment and guided pupil self-assessment, allows pupils to share in their own progress.
